Based on my academic background in psychology, my teaching philosophy is that the mentality is just as important as the technique.
Plenty of sources can teach you how tools like compressors or EQs work, but they usually don’t teach you the reasoning behind these tools. It all starts with the song. Having a clear idea behind your song is essential to finish it. The Songwriting section will give you guidelines on how to develop a solid idea to make your song interesting and unique.
When you have a solid song idea, it is time to design your sounds. The Sound Design section will teach you what sound design is, how you can select the right instruments and design sounds your way, and give you directions on where to go deeper into this topic.
Editing samples is part of sound design, but it deserves it’s own section. Sample Editing will teach you how to select good samples, cut them, stretch them, pitch them, and do all kinds of other stuff with them to elevate your track.
Finally, the Arrangement section takes you through everything you need to know to make a good song structure, so it flows well and listeners will keep their ears glued throughout the track.
Basic knowledge of music theory makes it a lot easier to make melodies and chords, and it doesn’t have to be dull and complicated. The Music Theory section will teach you the fundamentals of music theory so you can easily make scales, notes, melodies, and chords in all your tracks.
If you want to do make a lot of music, you will have a lot of projects, files, and software. Keeping these organized will save you lots of time and can save you from losing all your music that you have worked hard on. The Organization section gives you tips on how to keep your files and projects organized throughout your career.
Before touching any tools, it is essential to know the reasoning behind the tools. The Mixing Theory section teaches you the fundamental concepts behind any mix, and the reasoning behind your mixing choices. It gives you directions to answer questions such as “Why would I turn this up in volume?” or ” Why don’t I hear this thing clearly in the mix?”Â
How long should your mix take, and when are you finished? The Mixing Procedure section provides guidance in making your mixing process as productive and smooth as possible.
The fundamental part of every mix is the placement of elements. The Mixing Levels section teaches you about the three essential tools for sound placement in your mix: Volume, panning, and reverb. It teaches you that volume is not only a dB number, but that it is very subjective. It also teaches you how panning and stereo can be used to create a wide mix, and how reverb can be used to create depth.
You probably know what an EQ is, but how do you properly use it? The EQ section shows you the essentials of using an EQ, what to listen for when EQing, determining sound placement with EQ, relative EQing, the use of different EQ plugins, and more.
Bass is often the most difficult part of the mix. How do you get a solid bass without overpowering the mix? The Bass section teaches you what types of basses to use, how to edit your bass, how to mix your bass and kick, and how to determine the right level of the bass.
Compression is a term that is used very often in mixing tutorials. It may seem like it fixes everything. But what does it actually do, and why would you use it? The Compression section teaches you about the reasoning why you would use compression in the first place, and how to properly use it in different situations.
You may see distortion as a bad thing, but it can actually be very useful. The Distortion section teaches you about different forms of distortion, such as saturation and clipping, and how to use it to make your drums, sounds, basses, and other things sound interesting and full.
Reverb and delay are essential in creating depth in your mix. The Reverb and Delay section teaches you what the sound of reverb and delay actually is, and how you can use it in a way that makes sense, while maintaining a clean, solid mix.
Send effects are a way to have the most control over your effects. The Send Effects section teaches you how to use effects such as reverb and delay as send effects, so you have more control over them and can use these effects properly so they don’t overpower your mix.
Somewhere in your career, you will likely want to use vocals or record your own vocals in your tracks. The Vocals section teaches you how to properly record vocals, select the right vocals to fit in your track, and use the mixing tools to give them the right place in your mix.
When your mix is finished, you need to make it ready for the world to listen to. The Mastering section teaches you how to get your mix ready for mastering, what to look for when you’re considering a mastering engineer, and how to use the tools such as EQ, compression, and limiting to master your own music.
When you have finished your track, you probably want people to listen to it and hopefully earn some money with it. This can be a challenge, because there is a ton of music online, and the music industry is complicated. The Releasing Music section gives you guidance through the music business. It teaches you about master recording rights and publishing rights, the ways money from streaming gets divided, how you can collect money from streaming and public performance, how record labels and publishers work, and how you can do it all independently.
You don’t even have to release your music to have a career in music. There are many additional ways to earn money with music. The Additional Revenue Streams section teaches you about 14 more ways to earn a living with music, such as sync licensing, production work, selling beats and sample packs, crowdfunding, and more. Of course, you can’t do them all at the same time, so you will also get some guidance on how to choose the revenue streams that fit best with you.
At some point, you have probably felt stuck creatively, and the musical ideas just didn’t come. You may even had writers block. The Workflow & Creativity section uses psychological knowledge and experience to teach you ways to avoid these problems.
